Shortly after we brought my newborn daughter home we ended up back at the ER and ended up having to treat her for possible meningitis. We chose to go to Duke because it was the "best." They aren't. Not only were the doctors arrogant and unprofessional but after the IV that the ER put in failed after three days (not unusual) it took them three tries to put in a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line. The first one clotted (also not unusual but, we are pretty sure the nurse forgot to put in heparin, an anti-clotting medicine), the second one was accidentally pulled out by one of the nurses. Not only did they not apologize they charged us to have the third one put in. It also took them over twenty four hours to have someone come put in another line both times causing our less than month old daughter to have over 14 more shots during that time. In total, our daughter was stuck over forty times including seven attempts at a spinal tapp. They also charged me for seeing a specialist three times when we had an actual consultation once and he stopped by to "see how we were doing" twice. When we got the multiple bills from this hospital I called to make payment arrangements and they wanted me to pay upwards of three hundred dollars a month. (This is after my state BCBS insurance.) When I told them I could not afford to pay that much they refused to change the amount and have now turned me over to collections.

Three hours in the waiting room for acute abdominal pain. Copay due once you're triaged, not even treated. Wish someone would have told us that. They should tell you cost of procedure before making you consent to it
