Spinal Fusion Cost and Procedure Introduction

A spinal fusion is a procedure during which two or more vertebrae are joined (fused). Spinal fusions are performed to alleviate a number of problems: spinal stenosis, fractures, herniated discs, injuries, infection and tumors. Spinal fusions can be done using a bone from your pelvis or a bone bank. It can also be done with a metal implant, which will hold the vertebrae together until new bone can grow. Patient Preparation for Spinal Fusion

A physical examination will be performed along with blood or other diagnostic tests, such as X-rays and MRIs. Also, let your doctor know if you have heart, lung or other medical conditions that may need special attention. The procedure is done while you are under general anesthesia (unconscious and pain-free). The surgeon will make a cut over the vertebrae that need to be fused. After preparing the bone graft, the surgeon will place it between the vertebrae. Metal plates, rods or screws may be used to hold the vertebrae in place while the bone graft heals. Sometimes, the surgeon will use a synthetic substance to aid in bone growth and speed the fusion. Finally, the incision will be closed with stitches or staples.

After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room for observation. Once your blood pressure, pulse and breathing are stable and you are alert, you will be taken to a hospital room. Before being discharged, you will be given instructions about care for your incisions, limits on activities and what you should do to aid your recovery.
