Single anastomosis duodenal switch surgery (SADI), also called a loop duodenal switch, is a type of bariatric surgery similar to gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. During this procedure, the surgeon cuts away most of the stomach, leaving a small, banana-shaped sleeve. Then, they reroute the food’s path through the digestive system, bypassing most of the small intestine. SADI is considered an advancement on the traditional duodenal switch, as it only involves cutting and reattaching the small intestine at one point instead of two.

Patient Preparation for Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch Surgery

What to Expect During and After Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch Surgery
Loop duodenal switch surgery is often performed laparoscopically. During the procedure, a bariatric surgeon operates through several small incisions in the abdomen. They will divide your stomach with staples, then cut and remove the outer portion, leaving a small sleeve about one-third the size of your original stomach.
Then, the surgeon makes an incision beneath your duodenum (the part at the very top of your small bowel) to detach the small intestine from the stomach. They connect the duodenum farther down, bypassing about two-thirds to three-fourths of your small intestine and shortening the path your food takes from your stomach to your large intestine.
You’ll receive general anesthesia before the surgery, so you’ll be unconscious and pain-free during the procedure. Typically, SADI takes around two to four hours, not including preparation and recovery time. Immediately after your surgery, your medical team will take you to a recovery room where they can monitor you for any complications.
If you had your surgery at an outpatient surgery center, you should go home the same day. If you had your procedure at a hospital or other inpatient center, you might stay for one or more nights, depending on your rate of recovery.
Before you go home, you’ll be given specific guidelines for caring for your incisions, gradually introducing solid food into your diet, and starting a physical activity routine during your recovery.
